The Wolverines were doubted all year long, despite a
final record of 18-2-2, and that journey culminated with the second boys soccer
championship in school history at the 4A State Tournament in Caldwell.
Wood River was awarded the top seed according to
MaxPreps’ rating system, yet prognosticators pointed to traditional powers like
Bishop Kelly and Caldwell, and upstart Canyon Ridge (a team that had defeated
Wood River twice prior to state) as the favorites. 1st year coach Greg Gvozdas used that
motivation perfectly, as the Wolverines shot past Idaho Falls 3-1 in the
opening round at state.
What followed was a harrowing semifinal against Bishop
Kelly. The two powers battled to a 0-0
draw through regulation and two overtime periods, leading to two words no coach
wants to hear: penalty kicks. Wood River
went a perfect 5-for-5 on PKs, as Conrad Foster, Brandon Marroquin, Reidar
Slotten, Satya Redman and Garin Beste each found the net for the
Wolverines. Junior Ben Torres did just
enough in goal for Wood River, as Bishop Kelly scored on 4-of-5 PK attempts,
propelling the Wolverines to the championship game against Sandpoint. In the 4A finals, Wood River jumped out to a
2-1 lead at halftime, and cruised from there to a 3-1 victory, as Foster,
Marroquin and Jack Tierney all scored goals.
Wood River’s run to the 4A title showcased how deep and
versatile their team was all year.
Slotten and Redman scored a majority of the goals with 17 and 15,
respectively, but Wood River assisted on 48 of 68 goals on the season,
demonstrating an unselfish ability to pass up an opportunity for a better look
elsewhere.

Coeur d’Alene enjoyed a season for the ages, winning its first cross country championship since 2011. But that was just the tip of the iceberg for one of the most dominant teams in Idaho history.
There was the undefeated regular season, which included wins at prestigious meets like the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Montana and the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational in Arlington, Washington.
There was the perfect score of 15 points at the district competition, where the Vikings swept the top seven spots, led by Kyle Rohlinger’s 1st place finish.
And there was the toppling of powerful Rocky Mountain at the state meet in Pocatello. Coeur d’Alene finished with 45 points in the win, and had their top seven runners all finish 24th or higher.
After vanquishing every Idaho foe in sight, the Vikings headed to Eagle Island State Park in Boise for the Nike Northwest Regional competition. Led by Max Cervi-Skinner (10th overall) and Jacob King (11th), the Vikings became the first boys team in Idaho history to win regionals with a score of
Even at the Nike Cross National competition in Portland, Oregon, Coeur d’Alene represented Idaho well, finishing 11th overall. Max Cervi-Skinner finished 63rd overall, while King was next at 77th.
