The 59th Annual Emotion Bowl will kick off Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Ravsten Stadium between the Skyline Grizzlies and Idaho Falls Tigers.

The origins of the Emotion Bowl date back to 1966, when Skyline High School split off from Idaho Falls High School. But just one football field remained between the two programs, and one of the most bitter rivalries in the Gem State was born.

If there is one football game every year that both Skyline and Idaho Falls would say they wanted to win it would be The Emotion Bowl. Who can blame them? Win the Emotion Bowl and you get a full year of bragging rights and you are a part of history.

This year's seniors were in the middle of their 4th Grade Grid Kid season. Skyline comes in to the game 2-2 and Idaho Falls is 1-3.

It doesn't matter what you think you know about both teams. When it comes to the Emotion Bowl, the only sure thing is the unexpected will happen.

Emotion Bowl stats.
Idaho Falls is not 3-1 they are 1-3. I wish they were 3-1. Skyline wants you to think they played twice one year and that it counts. No, it doesn't. Playoffs don't count either. Skyline did not split from Idaho Falls. Skyline attended school at Idaho Falls until their school was finished being completed. Skyline did not officially open until 1968. The reason they get to paint the posts is because the student body president of Idaho Falls put it to a vote, and it passed. Whoever won the game got to paint the posts their respective color. Unfortunately for Idaho Falls, it backfired for many I.F./Skyline matches to come.

Second game in ‘67
If you look at the archive Post Register files, specifically the PRPreps archive portion. In lists 2 games played for varsity against Skyline in the 1967 season. We lost 7-0 and 20-14. And the JV team played Skyline 3 times in 1967 and beat them twice and had a draw. (27-20, 0-0, and 20-0)

59th Game
We were contacted by the school district this week letting us know that this is the 59th, not the 60th. They only counted one of the two games they played in 1967 as the true Emotion Bowl.

Well that doesn’t make a lick of sense. They didn’t have a problem with it one, five, ten or fifty years ago. They officially called the 2014 game the 50th. How can the teams play in the game, the goalposts get repainted afterwards and not count as a rivalry game? But knowing the people who make decisions in D91, I am not surprised they came to this awful choice.

Numbers game.
I'm not sure where this extra game is coming from, but I seem to recall it being mentioned somewhere around the late 2010s. I used to follow an Emotion Bowl.com website for several years and this game was never mentioned in that list. Unfortunately, the website no longer exists. Another thing that doesn't make a lick of sense is painting the posts the same color twice. Something Skyline was notorious for doing every year after a win and even after losing the game and not dealing with bragging rights. I'll agree that D91 doesn't have the brightest people working there. They didn't even post the usual set of rules that have to be followed for the Emotion Bowl. i.e. No reentry after you go in, or no spray paint because it's supplied after the game now. When it comes to them keeping track of what the record is, I'll take the district over the Post Register any day.

It happened.
In 1967 both teams opened week 1 against eachother and Skyline won 7-0, then in week 14 they played again and Skyline won 20-14. The district recognized both games as Emotion Bowls until this year, (mostly because they messed up the memorial rock and don’t want to admit their mistakes). You can see pictures of both games in the 1967-1968 yearbooks.

Another EB in the books.
Well now that another Emotion Bowl has come and gone, let us reflect. 1. Anything can happen. I would have bought this about a decade ago, now only once did an upset occur which was in 2021. Idaho Falls beat Skyline 38-34 after a huge comeback in the fourth quarter. As much as I hate to say it, Skyline almost always wins this game easily. 2. They split apart. They were part of the same school for a couple of years until Skyline was finished being built. 3. One stadium remained. And yet, almost 60 years later, Skyline still hasn't made one possible for themselves.
