BOYS BASKETBALL
GAME OF THE NIGHT
Wilder
38, Compass Charter 35
Compass Charter appeared to have this 2A Western Idaho
Conference game in hand, leading 31-23 after three quarters of play. But the Wildcats outscored the Aviators 15-4
in the fourth frame to cap a furious comeback win. Wilder tied the game on a steal and a layup
by Brandon Leal-Perez with 1:48 to play.
Then, with just five seconds remaining, Leal-Perez hit the game-winning
three from the corner to complete the comeback.
Wilder is 1-1 in WIC play and 4-7 overall. Compass Charter is 0-2 and 7-4.
PRIME-TIME
PERFORMER
The Bonners Ferry Badgers are one of Idaho’s best all-around teams,
regardless of region or classification. While players like Asher Williams, Thomas
Bateman and Eli Blackmore garner more headlines, the unsung hero is senior
point guard Brody Rice. In Friday’s
74-21 win over Montana’s Stillwater Christian, Rice scored six points total. But his value derives from his table-setting
abilities. In addition to the six
points, Rice added a whopping 13 assists, and also came away with five steals
defensively.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
GAME OF THE NIGHT
Bonneville
60, Shelley 58 (OT)
The 5A High Country Conference may be Idaho’s most rigorous in girls
basketball. Its six members are all
capable of nabbing one of the two bids available to the state tournament in
February, and any team can win on any given night. Case in point: Bonneville, 6-9 overall and
1-5 in HCC play, earned its first league win of the season on Friday night over
defending state champion Shelley (6-9 overall, 3-3 in HCC). Shelley had to rally just to force overtime,
erasing a 52-46 deficit with 30 seconds to play on three-pointers from Mallory
Higham and Mia Williams. When Jade Kelly
hit a three from the corner to put Shelley ahead 58-55 with 1:20 to play in
overtime, Russet fans thought they could breathe easy. But Bonneville scored the game’s final five
points over the last minute of OT.
6-foot-2 senior Katilyn Nelson scored inside to cut the gap to 58-57,
then Diana Peterson hit a floater on the next possession to give the Bees a
59-58 lead. Williams had a good look at
a three at the top of the key that would have given the Russets the lead back,
but her shot missed, Bonneville rebounded, and Kaycie Cook sank one free throw
with four seconds remaining to push the lead to 60-58. Shelley’s desperation heave ultimately fell
short, and Bonneville earned a win that could change the course of its season.
PRIME-TIME PERFORMER
In this space yesterday, we paid tribute to Kamiah senior David Kludt for
surpassing 1,000 career points. Another 2A
Whitepine League standout did the same on Friday night, as Prairie senior Lexi
Schumacher reached that plateau in the Pirates’ 78-6 league victory over
Logos. Schumacher finished with 28
points and 11 steals in the win.
