Team Preview:
The Weiser Wolverines jumped out of the gate quickly last season to a 9-3 record. But then adversity hit. The Wolverines lost eight of their last 10 and failed to make the state playoffs.
The Wolverines finished 11-12 overall. Second year coach Brad Adlofson said the team “overachieved” early. He was surprised how they switched so well early in the season to an entirely new system – going from being a zone team defensively to man-to-man and from the Princeton offense to motion.
“We had problems dealing with adversity late,” said Adolfson. “It started rolling downhill and we couldn’t slow it down. Things like that happen sometime…The biggest thing we learned is team chemistry is important that we continue to teach student athletes how to deal with adversity and what to do when things aren’t going well.
“I think our leadership this year from our four returning kids will be a huge asset to our group.”
Leading the way is senior wing Thomas Crawford. A returning all-league performer, Crawford is described as a players who does everything really well. “He’s the kind of kids you wish he had ten of,” said Adolfson.
Senior post Evan Loomis (6-foot-2) will be the defensive leader. “He needs to control the boards for us and he’s a kid that can go off offensively for us any given night as well,” said the coach.
Junior point guard Tony Lopez, and honorable mention all-conference player last year, is a “steady” player expected to make a big contribution. Junior wing JaCoby Beesley “improved over the summer” and is one of Weiser’s better shooters.
Adolfson is hoping to see improvement because this is the second season the team has run a motion offense. “We’re going to get up and down the floor when we can with understanding there’s times we are going to have to slow down when we have to. But we’re going to see how fast we can play.”
Defensively the Wolverines are going to throw multiple looks including man, zone and press. “We’ll be an every changing defensive team.”
As far as league player, Coaches around the league expect the Wolverines to be more competitive given their experience in Adolfson’s system. The league is loaded with Homedale returning a lot of talent for a 22-3 team. An athletic Fruitland team will be better. Parma returns several players and Emmett Drops down from 4A full of experienced players.
“I really think our league is going to be improved from top to bottom,” Adolfson said. “It’s going to be a battle each and every night in our league.”
