David Young has high expectations for his Skyview Hawks in the 2016 season.
The offense will hope to see much needed health from the offensive front, something which did not happen in the 2015 season.
“Our passing attack should be as efficient as ever,” Young said. “Last year, our offensive line was young and endured many injuries. After week 2 we did not start the same offensive line in consecutive games for the rest of the season.”
Injuries plagued the Hawks last season, leading to a 3-7 season, a record that Young hopes to improve.
With a new quarterback at the helm, a fresh-faced running back and a more experienced offensive line, he has reason for that hope.
Wyatt Storer, just a sophomore, will be the starting quarterback for Skyview. Joining him in the backfield will be fellow sophomore Tyler Crowe at running back, who will replace two-year starter Cody Ghighina.
“[Cody] was a fast and explosive game-changer,” Young said of his former running back. Also lost to graduation is Mr. Versatility, Trevor Hatch.
Last season, Hatch could be found at both outside and inside linebacker, offensive and defensive line and tight end. His ability to play snaps not only on both sides of the football, but also at multiple different positions on each of those sides, is something that the Hawks will miss dearly this season.
Defensively the Hawks will also have to do without All-State corner Tanner Tracht, who would be tasked with shutting down the best wide receivers on a weekly basis. Replacing Tracht’s leadership and ability will be Davis Young, who is entering his junior season.
“Last year we set team records on defense against the pass,” Young proudly stated. “That really means we were not very good against the run, so we will look to stop the run and make teams beat us through the air.”
In order to stop the run, the Hawks will have to depend on their front seven, led by Owen Rockwood, Pedro Galvan, Adam Nebel, and Caleb Acevedo on the defensive line.
“We also add in Cameron Clark, AJ Hertz, Fili Church, and Tyler Crowe at linebacker spots to be tough, physical and athletic,” Young added. “Our focus will be to stop the run.”
The key for Skyview this season will be something they did not do last year, stay healthy. If the Hawks can accomplish this and win the turnover battle, look for them to be a potential sleeper in the Southern Idaho Conference.
